For obvious functional reasons, the mediaeval kitchen was located next to the Refectory. It was destroyed in the 17th century, when the Afonso VI Cloister was built and only its Romanic door remains.
The current kitchen, between the Refectory and the Monks’ Room, has in its middle a huge chimney covered in glazed tiles, as are all the interior walls. At the back is a water basin with water brought by the canal system. The grandiose, almost regal, ambience of the kitchen is a surprise to the visitor in the context of the mediaeval temperance of the Cloister of Silence.
